The effects of the heating parameters during hot gas series welding on the material damage were investigated in this study. Above all, high gas temperatures and long heating times increase the risk of material damage to the plastics to be joined and their precise effects on the weld quality are not known. For this purpose, heating specimens were viscometrically and spectroscopically analysed for any possible degradation layer by layer in the completely molten regions. It was shown that any thermal-oxidative damage arises principally at the joining face while deeper layers are affected primarily by thermal damage which may result in a decrease in the weld strength.
